Sometimes a situation arises and you find yourself asking, ‘How can we help?’ That’s how we felt when we heard about Corey Swensson.
Corey had two strokes two days after being assaulted. He wasn’t expected to survive. He did – and immediately began beating the odds. Trouble was Corey needed intensive rehabilitation to get back to work and, for some reason, his circumstances didn’t tick the right boxes to qualify for ACC funding. Corey’s family and work colleagues were not prepared to accept this. They launched Project Re-build Corey to raise funds for his rehab. We wanted to help.
On Saturday 20th April, a pile of people congregated in the Carlton Ballroom at the Travelodge to help him get that rehab. Some of those people were Corey’s friends and colleagues; others were people who had never met him. Some donated goods to go under the hammer, others donated their time or a service. All came together in the spirit of helping another person and raised over $50,000 in total on the night.
We feel humbled and privileged to have been a part of Corey and Rochelle’s journey. They have shown the most amazing strength and determination, facing challenges most of us are not likely to ever experience.
